Residential Energy Use
Approximately 30% of residential energy consumption is used to operate appliances within the home! () Because of technological advances, one can now purchase appliances that are signicantly more energy efficient than those available even just a decade ago. If just one in 10 homes used ENERGY STAR® qualified appliances, the change would be like planting 1.7 million new acres of trees. |

Refrigerator - Freezer Energy Usage
| • |
Replace your old refrigerator/ freezer (if it is over 10 years old) with a new one that is Energy Star certified. Energy Star certified refrigerators use about half as much energy as models manufactured before 1993. Click here for a list of ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerators. |
| • |
Here are a few suggestions for reducing the energy usage of your refrigerator:
• Clean the cooling coils of your refrigerator. Vacuum behind your refrigerator at least once a year, making sure to remove dirt and dust from the coils. (Dust build-up not only increases energy use, but it may cause your refrigerator to wear out sooner.)
• Check your freezer temperature. Keep your freezer at a temperature between 0-5 degrees F. Settings below this use more energy and are not necessary.

Clothes Washers/Dryers
| • |
An ENERGY STAR qualified clothes washer can save up to $110 per year on your utility bills compared to those manufactured before 1994. Click here for a list of energy efficient washers. |
| • |
ENERGY STAR qualified clothes washers clean clothes using 50% less energy than standard washers, and a lot less water also. (Source: Pacific Gas and Electric) |
| • |
ENERGY STAR does not recommend specific clothes dryers since most use the same amount of energy. |
| • |
Most ENERGY STAR qualified washers extract more water from clothes during the spin cycle. This reduces the drying time and saves energy and wear and tear on your clothes. |
