Wind Energy
Wind generated electricity has increased markedly in the U.S. since 1970 but still accounts for a small fraction of overall power generation: only 2% of overall energy consumed in the U.S. is from wind generated power (source: Energy Information Administation, 2004). However the potential is there. According to the U.S. EPA, suitable wind areas, which cover 6% of the contiguous U.S. land area, have the potential to supply more than one and a half times the current electricity consumption of the United States (source: U.S. EPA - Energy, Efficiency and Renewable Energy).
There are many benefits to wind energy - chief among them is that zero greenhouse gases are emitted through wind energy generation. However, wind energy must compete on price and on capacity with fossil fuel sources. Wind farms have a relatively high initial investment cost and due to the intermittent nature of wind, wind energy cannot always be relied upon to deliver capacity when and where it is needed most.
